Studio Game Design Director
We are hiring for a Studio Design Director to lead our Game Design craft across all projects. The Studio Design Director is a craft representative role that provides insight and leadership, your responsibilities include:
Craft Guidance
- Define the best practices and design processes used across the studio in multiple projects in game design, system design and level design.
- Provide technical oversight of the work of the design department throughout the production process.
- You support the personal development of designers and the craft on a studio level which also includes working closely with all disciplines to ensure that design is compatible and complementary to other key elements of the game, including art, animation, audio and code.
- Define, manage and execute on development for the design craft together with the Head of Creative.
- Support the team through implementation so that ensure that the project vision is reflected in all stages of design and implementation of game mechanics, systems, controls, narrative, and the player experience.
Leadership
- You support the personal development of designers and the craft on a studio level.
- You provide expert support, guidance and direction to Designers in all aspects of the creation process including designing mechanics, systems, levels and the holistic experience.
- Provide leadership within your craft to the studio, through which you motivate and serve as an inspiration to the whole craft in leading by example.
- Work together with the other directors, as well as studio management, to help define our overall vision, missions and strategy. Create plans and execute on these in order to achieve the common goals.
- Work collaboratively with respective project leadership and site to guide the future roadmap of your craft.
- Function as a vital part in establishing a culture of being smarter together, enabling creativity, learning and developing as well as healthy accountability where each member of the team can take pride in their accomplishments.
- Serve as part of the studio leadership team in:
- Understanding and defining each project's vision and needs.
- Balancing craft, product and company needs to achieve desired outcomes.
- Enabling needs to production and other crafts while managing expectations.
- Work with the Head of Operation to staff, grow and develop your team.
- Work with the Head of Production to establish development processes and project planning in your team as well as in collaboration with others.
- Operate as the leader of your craft. Hire and grow the team as well as provide leadership and coaching to each project’s senior leadership in your craft.
Practical Responsibilities
- Lead and shape studio standards in your craft.
- Guide high-level architecture and implementation choices, set processes and budgets.
- Own the studio roadmap in your craft and help steer company wide initiatives that feed into project implementation choices. Balance needs to ensure delivery on time and at budget.
- Serve as ultimately responsible for design choices and implementation strategies within your craft.
- Validate that chosen paths in the craft meet the quality, performance and stability targets agreed upon.
- Continuously work with project leads in your craft to improve proficiency, efficiency and proposing solutions to problems.
- Manage risks and dependencies within your craft,
- Perform research and development as necessary in order to advance our standards and bring new and innovative solutions to your craft.
- Manage the leaders in your teams.
Requirements
- Extensive game design experience across a different subcrafts; i.e. systems, level, etc.
- Strong inter-departmental communication skills with a deep understanding of how all disciplines collaborate on a production pipeline (programming, art, animation, etc).
- An open mind to try new and different approaches.
- An experienced people leader and follower, who understands the competencies of your team, what they and you need to excel, and how to inspire great performance.
